Coffee, How I Love Thee

Tea drinkers, move along now. Because this is “cawfee tawk” time, a post in which I need to share my joy of java with ya’.

Why dedicate a post to coffee? Because in attempting to answer the oh-so-frequent question of how I do what I do, my most common answer is: coffee. Lots and lots of COFFEE.

My motto

Coffee is more than just a drink to me. It’s a hobby. It’s a passion. It’s my lifeblood. It’s so… ME.

Blood Type C….

If I were trapped on a desert island, the one possession I’d take would be my Keurig. Well, I’d need K-cups, too. And a water purifier if I was surrounded by salt water. Oh, and creamer.  And a mug, though maybe I could fashion one out of coconut shell like Gilligan’s Island. Can that all count as “one” cup of coffee?

You get the point.

I LOVE my coffee. I mean LUUUVVVEEE it.

I can’t wait to savor my first cup of the day. I get a euphoric head-rush just stepping into a Starbucks, which with six kids, doesn’t happen nearly as often as I’d like.  I’m really intense about it, too. Though I often make my own at home, buying coffee out is a big deal.

The closer I get to it, the more I want it now. NOW. Give me all the coffee.  And though I’m all polite on the outside, inside I’m kind of like:

My favorite time of day is about 15 minutes into my latest cup , when the caffeine really starts flowing, and I morph into my most energetic, enthusiastic & motivated self.  I’m fun. I’m witty. I’m my best version of my perky Six Pack self.

I tried eliminating caffeine once- can’t even remember for what insane reason it may have been, but let’s just say…

“Happy wife, happy life”- NOPE.

“If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” – YUP.

Most important to me, however, are coffee’s health benefits. Studies have shown that it can reduce your chances of certain cancers, and drinking a substantial amount may even ward off depression.

Well, that’s just peachy. But the most crucial health benefit I have discovered as an avid coffee drinker is:

I’m a much better mom when I’m adequately caffeinated.

Because let’s face it, this parenting thing is reeeally hard work. Keeping a household of eight up and running take a lot, and since the late night hours are the only free hours I have, well… let’s just say, I’m quite the night owl. Which is fun, while it’s happening.

But then morning comes, and in order to be able to function, this owl needs a serious java fix, know what I’m sayin’??

How I wake up; The Captain’s one lucky guy, huh??

So devout is my love of the bean that my kitchen décor is dedicated to my java joy.

Of course, there’s the downside. You know, … when the caffeine wears off. It happens, and I go from being a homemaking dynamo to..

But that’s the awesome thing about the Keurig- instant gratification. In 15 seconds, another cup of heaven is brewed. Unless the K-cups run low, or, God forbid, OUT. Then you have a dire situation.

It can strike without warning…

So is it an addiction? A coping mechanism? I say nay. It’s OCD. As in,

Please consider donating any available funds, or Starbucks gift cards, to this pressing mental health issue.

It’s also apparently genetic…

“I learned it by watching YOU!”

I don’t discriminate, however. I am friends with those who like Dunkin Donuts. I enjoy the company of some who drink decaf, though I…don’t…get…it. Tea drinker? Ok, fiiiine. You can still come over and hang with me and the brood. It’s probably better that way, anyway, because then there’s more coffee for me.
